Men's Club Soccer Battles Hard At Nationals

11/25/2024 8:41:00 AM

The Brown Men's Club Soccer team had a respectable showing in the 2024 NIRSA National Soccer Championships held in Round Rock, TX last week. The Bears finished 2-1 overall in Group C pool play however, the squad just missed out on advancing to the single elimination tournament due to goal differential. Day 1 of competition started early for Bruno with an 8am opening game vs. James Madison where the Bears came away with 1-0 win. The goal was scored in the last 10 minutes of the game by Aidan Cleland and was assisted by Jesse Benetiz. Later that afternoon the Bears battled Texas Tech in Game 2 and it looked as if the game was heading towards a tie until Brando Babini scored off a Miles Bryson assist with less than 5 minutes to go to give Brown the 1-0 win.

Needing a win or tie to advance to the single elimination tournament, Bruno fell 1-0 to a talented San Diego State squad on Day 2. The Aztecs scored the lone goal midway through the 1st half to take the early advantage. Yet the Bears did not fret and dominated the 2nd half of play nearly putting several shots in the back of the net but several great saves by the Aztec goalkeeper kept Brown off the board and giving San Diego State the 1-0 victory.

While the tournament did not end the way the team had hoped, the Brown Men's Club Soccer team represented their University and the Ivy League proudly showing good sportsmanship and playing hard for 80 minutes each match. Minnesota came away the Men's Open Tournament Champion beating UCLA in Penalty Kicks.
