About GAMMA

Grappling and Mixed Martial Arts (GAMMA) combines the grappling and striking components of a variety of martial arts. Specifically, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and wrestling comprise the majority of the grappling focus. Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is essentially ground fighting and it is typically promoted as a way for a smaller, weaker individual to control a larger, stronger opponent; for this reason, many practice Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu for self-defense, although many also do it simply for sport. Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu emphasizes control over a resisting opponent through the superior use of leverage, positioning, and technique, as in throws and takedowns, joint locks, and chokes.

These techniques are meant to end a fight against a fully resisting opponent without injury to either party. GAMMA also incorporates the striking elements of Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) which originally stem from arts such as Muay Thai and boxing. Muay Thai is known as the “Art of Eight Limbs” for its extensive use of strikes with the hands, legs, elbows, and knees. Almost all modern professional MMA fighters rely on Muay Thai as the basis for their striking, and we follow the same formula, combining it with grappling arts to develop well-rounded fighting and self-defense skills.

Despite how competitive grappling and MMA can be, GAMMA actually has a relaxed and friendly atmosphere. We do not wear gis, bow in, or award belts as you may be used to in other martial arts. We focus on learning skills safely and collaboratively rather than emphasizing the tradition maintained by many arts.

We welcome new members from all skill levels, including absolute beginners. Come see whatGAMMA is about!
